Online Accessibility

Online Accessibility is not an Accident. Making certain that ALL students have access to instructional materials takes planning, organization and committment. Accessibilty needs to make sense – Accessibilty is an approach to providing educational materials to students. Universal Design is a design concept intending to make education materials usable to a larger number of students. Accessibility is not simply a set of rules as in setting an “alt” tag. An alt tag can be set and it makes the site legal but the alt tag might also not make sense. The alt tag for an image might be set to “image” which makes sense since a Blind instrudent may not see the image. However if the image is a picture of the painting “Mona Lisa” then an alt tag set to picture misses the point where a more meaningful alt tag might be : ‘ picture of the painting “Mona Lisa” ‘.
